Police are questioning around 80 people after an anti-illegal immigrant march turned violent in Kranskop, KwaZulu-Natal. Three foreign nationals were allegedly assaulted and shops were looted on Wednesday.
Police in Greytown are questioning at least 80 of people detained after an anti-illegal immigrant march turned violent in Kranskop.
KZN SAPS says demonstrators allegedly looted shops and assaulted three foreign nationals during the protest on Wednesday.
Two of the victims are said to be receiving medical treatment, while the third victim has yet to be located.
The group of around 80 people is believed to have boarded a bus heading towards Greytown following the violence.
The vehicle was intercepted by police on the R74. Those on board were escorted to a local SAPS station for questioning.
Preliminary investigations suggest the injured migrants are in South Africa legally, although their immigration status is yet to be verified by Home Affairs.
KZN SAPS spokesperson Robert Netshiunda says they are also probing allegations that one of the victims was robbed of an undisclosed amount of money during the attack.
"Police are reiterating the call that those who want to march for any cause must to so within the ambits of the law and that they must not take the law into their own hands.
"No civilians are allowed to do door-to-door operations, and only law enforcement officers can conduct stop and searches and effect arrest on any kind of crime.
"Police will continue to work with protesters who respect the law and are willing to cooperate with law enforcement officers."
