Two Cape Town parents have been accused of selling their 11-year-old daughter for just R100 in a disturbing case in Strandfontein.
Police arrested the duo after a resident in the Masincedane informal settlement raised the alarm over the alleged exploitation of the child.
Resident raises alarm over 11-year-old girl
According to a report, the resident recorded a video after discovering what was allegedly happening to the girl. The video later circulated on social media and sparked outrage.
The resident alleged that the girl’s parents sold her for sex for R100.
He also claimed that he confronted the girl’s father about the situation. According to the resident, the father told him that the child needed to contribute to the household because he had no money.
Western Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg confirmed that police arrested two suspects, aged 20 and 47.
The pair appeared in the Mitchells Plain Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 11 August. Both suspects in custody until their formal bail application.
Police are investigating rape and sexual exploitation allegations linked to the case.
The allegations have angered residents in Strandfontein, with community members demanding justice and protection for the child.
Media outlets have withheld the video and information that could identify the 11-year-old.
Police continue to investigate the case.
