City Power is tackling more than 6,000 outstanding outage reports in Johannesburg as freezing temperatures increase electricity demand and wet conditions delay repairs and restoration efforts.
City Power is dealing with more than 6,000 outstanding outage reports in Johannesburg as freezing temperatures drive up electricity demand.
The utility says adverse weather conditions are delaying response times, while increased power use is placing additional pressure on the electricity network.
City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena says teams are working to restore supply and attend to faults.
He urges residents to report outages through the utility’s official channels as repair crews continue responding to calls.
“Higher demand from heaters and other appliances during the cold spell, combined with waterlogged ground that delays safe excavation and cable repairs, is extending some restoration times,” Mangena says.
“Across the network, City Power is managing approximately 3 682 individual open calls. This remains exceptionally high, with a significant portion logged in the past 24 hours as new faults continue to be reported alongside ongoing restorations.”
Mangena says teams are prioritising outages according to scale, customer impact, essential services, and public safety.
“Progress is being made in several areas through partial restorations while new faults continue to enter the system,” he adds.
