South Africans who have not yet registered to vote in the 2026 Local Government Elections have until midnight on Friday, 7 August 2026 to register or update their voting details.
The Electoral Commission (IEC) has urged eligible voters not to leave it until the last minute, warning that online registration platforms and support channels are expected to become increasingly busy as the deadline approaches.
Citizens who missed the final voter registration weekend can still complete the process online through the IEC’s voter registration portal or by using the Commission’s new WhatsApp registration service.
To register via WhatsApp, voters simply need to send “Hi” to 0600 88 0000.
The service guides users through secure identity verification using a one-time password, ID document uploads, address confirmation and voting station selection.
Some users may be redirected to the IEC’s online portal to verify their residential address using an interactive map.
Those who prefer registering in person can still make use of designated registration stations before the deadline.
Strong turnout during registration weekend
The IEC reported that more than 1.7 million people interacted with its registration services during the final registration weekend on 1 and 2 August.
The weekend also saw 291 806 first-time voter registrations, while young South Africans accounted for a significant share of activity.
According to the Commission, 485 757 transactions involved people aged between 16 and 29, with 46% of all new registrations coming from voters under the age of 29.
Although South Africans can register from the age of 16, only citizens aged 18 and older are eligible to vote.
The IEC has reminded voters who have moved to update their addresses before the registration period closes.
Unlike national elections, local government elections require voters to cast their ballots at the voting station where they are registered.
Voters can check their registration status by SMSing “myID” followed by their ID number to 32810, while the IEC Contact Centre on 0800 11 8000 is available to assist with registration queries.
The 2026 Local Government Elections are scheduled for Wednesday, 4 November, with the official election timetable expected to be published following the election proclamation on Friday, 7 August.
