The Full Story
Applying for a Smart ID card through a bank in South Africa has just become even easier.
Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber has launched a new online service that allows South Africans to quickly find their nearest participating bank branch offering Smart ID applications.
The new platform, available at myhomeaffairsonline.dha.gov.za, provides a real-time directory of participating branches across the country and will automatically update as more banks join the department’s Digital Partnership programme.
372 bank branches now available for Smart ID applications
The launch comes as Home Affairs continues to rapidly expand its banking partnership.
According to the department, 372 bank branches across South Africa now offer Smart ID services, making it easier for citizens to replace the older green barcoded ID book with the more secure Smart ID card.
Since the Digital Partnership was launched on 9 March 2026, more than 500 000 South Africans have applied for Smart ID cards through participating bank branches.
Schreiber said the new online locator is another step towards making Home Affairs services more accessible.
Rather than searching individual bank websites or contacting branches directly, South Africans can now use a single platform to find their nearest participating branch.
As more branches are added to the programme, they will automatically appear on the website, ensuring the information remains up to date.
Encouraging South Africans to switch
Schreiber urged South Africans who still use the green barcoded ID book to take advantage of the growing network of bank branches and switch to a Smart ID card.
He said the department’s vision is to bring Home Affairs services closer to where people live, work and bank, making it simpler and more convenient to access government services.
The department said the continued expansion of the Digital Partnership is aimed at reducing queues, improving accessibility and helping more South Africans move to the more secure Smart ID card.
Latest Developments
A new online service has launched, allowing users to quickly find participating bank branches for Smart ID applications. 372 branches currently support this service, streamlining the process for citizens to obtain their Smart ID cards. Over 500,000 people have already utilized this service since March 2026.
Why It Matters
The new online locator not only simplifies the application process but also promotes the adoption of Smart ID cards, which are more secure than traditional ID books. This initiative represents a significant step towards modernizing and enhancing the accessibility of Home Affairs services for all South Africans.
