More than 43 000 SASSA Gold Card holders in the Western Cape still need to replace their cards before 31 August.
Postbank has confirmed it will not extend the deadline.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Western Cape has urged beneficiaries to act now. The party also welcomed steps taken by Postbank and the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) to speed up the replacement process.
More than 29 000 card holders are in Cape Town
Figures presented to the Western Cape Legislature’s Standing Committee on Social Development show that 43 515 beneficiaries still need to replace their SASSA Gold Cards.
Retail partnerships expand replacement sites
The DA said Postbank has expanded access through partnerships with Pick n Pay, Boxer, Shoprite and Spar. The partnerships now provide 39 card replacement sites across the province.
Postbank and SASSA have also increased awareness through SMSs, WhatsApp messages, radio campaigns, municipal councillors, traditional leaders and community organisations.
The party further welcomed progress reported to the committee. This includes filling critical vacancies at SASSA, improving systems and working with municipalities to establish dedicated SASSA service points.
DA urges beneficiaries to replace cards now
DA Western Cape spokesperson on Social Development Wendy Kaizer-Philander urged beneficiaries not to leave the replacement process until the last minute.
“We encourage beneficiaries not to wait until the last minute. Those who are able to do so should consider switching their grant payments to either a Postbank black card or a bank of their choice.”
She also called on SASSA and Postbank to increase daily replacement capacity and strengthen outreach efforts to prevent long queues and ensure beneficiaries continue receiving their grants without disruption.
The DA said it will continue monitoring the replacement process to protect the interests of vulnerable residents across the Western Cape.
