Siphiwe Thusini was gunned down outside his home in K Section home last Friday.
Police in KwaZulu-Natal have assigned seasoned investigators from the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) to establish if the assassination of an uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MK Party) member in KwaMashu was related to politics.
Thusini's brother said he was found lying next to his car with gunshot wounds.
The killing has raised concerns as it comes just months before the local government elections.
Police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda said detectives were still searching for Thusini's killers.
"Police received reports of a shooting, and when they arrived at the scene, the deceased was found lying in a pool of blood with multiple gunshot wounds.
"The suspects are unknown at this stage. The deceased was believed to have been active in political activities, and investigations will reveal whether his murder was politically motivated."
GAUTENG PKTT ARRESTS THREE SUSPECTS LINKED TO EFF MEMBER'S MURDER
The Gauteng PKTT arrested three people aged 40, 42 and 44, after Makola’s body was discovered in Delmas last week.
He had been reported missing after he was last seen on 10 July.
At the time of the discovery, police said preliminary findings showed that Makola had been shot and killed before his lifeless body was later dumped in the bush.
National Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said the suspects are expected to make their first appearance before the Delmas Magistrates Court on Wednesday, where they will face charges of murder, kidnapping, and robbery.
Meanwhile, police say the alleged gunman in the murder of African National Congress Tshwane councillor Thabang Masemola may be linked to two other murders.
Vusimuzi Champ Gebuza was arrested alongside a female suspect in May this year after they were linked to the assassination of Masemola.
The Ward 10 councillor was shot and killed in the streets of Mamelodi in July last year.
