National Coloured Congress (NCC) leader and MP Fadiel Adams has started serving a 20 parliamentary sitting-day suspension.
The National Assembly adopted recommendations from the Joint Committee on Ethics and Members’ Interests after it found that Adams breached Parliament’s Code of Ethical Conduct.
The suspension took effect on 3 August. Parliament also ordered Adams to forfeit 20 days’ salary and allowances. He must also apologise to the House.
Adams absent from key committee meeting
Adams’ suspension came into focus during Wednesday’s Section 89 Committee meeting.
African Transformation Movement (ATM) MP Vuyo Zungula questioned why Adams had not taken part in the committee’s vote. Committee Secretary Thembinkosi Ngema confirmed that Adams could not participate because he was serving a parliamentary suspension.
Moloto Mothapo, Parliament spokesperson, said in line with the resolutions of the National Assembly, Mr Adams will serve his suspension until 28 August 2026.
The ethics committee found that Adams published the personal information of a Democratic Alliance staff member on Facebook without consent.
It ruled that the incident marked Adams’ second ethics breach involving social media.
The committee recommended a reprimand, an apology to the House, a 20 parliamentary sitting-day suspension and the forfeiture of 20 days’ salary and allowances. The National Assembly adopted those recommendations.
The parliamentary sanction is unrelated to Adams’ criminal case.
Adams remains out on R10 000 bail on charges of fraud and defeating or obstructing the administration of justice. He has denied the allegations.
