South African hip-hop legend DJ Ready D has entered politics by joining the People’s Movement for Change (PMC).
PMC president Marius Fransman announced Deon “DJ Ready D” Daniels as the movement’s latest member ahead of the Local Government Elections.
The District Six-born DJ said he made the decision after careful consideration.
“After careful consideration, I am willing to embrace this new direction and join the movement. I do so with humility, a willingness to learn and a genuine desire to serve,” Daniels said.
He pointed to the PMC’s economic and community priorities as reasons for joining.
“I am particularly encouraged by the party’s commitment to empowering small and micro businesses, strengthening local communities, and investing in people,” he said.
Ready D grew up on the Cape Flats and has spent more than four decades in South Africa’s music industry.
He made his name as a member of pioneering hip-hop group Prophets of da City. The group took South African hip-hop abroad and toured extensively in Europe.
Ready D later became a four-time South African DMC champion and competed internationally.
His career also spans radio, television, music production and community development.
Fransman said Ready D’s experience with young people, the creative industry and Cape Flats communities would add value to the PMC.
The party plans to place a strong focus on culture, sport and entertainment as potential drivers of opportunities for young South Africans.
It also wants young people to play a greater role in shaping their communities.
“The PMC believes that our young people must not merely be treated as an election demographic; they must be given a meaningful role in shaping the society in which they live,” Fransman said.
Ready D said he hopes to help build safer and more prosperous communities through his new political role.
“Together, I believe we can help build stronger, safer and more prosperous communities for all,” he said.
The PMC operates under three pillars: “Family. Community. Opportunity.”
