Gauteng residents are being urged to brace themselves for one of the coldest weeks in years as an intense cold front is expected to sweep across the province next week.
According to the South African Weather Service (SAWS), a cold front accompanied by a cut-off low is expected to affect parts of KwaZulu-Natal, the Free State, Western Cape, Northern Cape and Eastern Cape from Sunday before reaching Gauteng on Monday evening.
After what has been a relatively mild winter for Gauteng, residents could be in for a dramatic change in conditions, with temperatures expected to plunge across the province.
Cold weather in Gauteng and many provinces this week
Johannesburg will enjoy relatively warm conditions on Sunday, with temperatures reaching a high of 20°C.
However, conditions are expected to change rapidly on Monday as the cold front moves in, with temperatures dropping to a maximum of just 14°C and a minimum of 6°C.
Tuesday is expected to be the coldest day of the week, with temperatures in Johannesburg forecast to range between a minimum of 4°C and a maximum of just 6°C.
Snow is also a possibility in Johannesburg and other parts of Gauteng as the cold front intensifies.
Regional weather service Gauteng Weather has also highlighted the potential for snowfall in the province when the system reaches Gauteng on Monday evening.
“Snow & heavy rain possible in Gauteng late Monday into Tuesday due to the cold snap. Only some models are picking up snow. This early forecast is subject to change, but we’re closely monitoring developments,” Gauteng Weather posted on X.
While the possibility of snow remains subject to change, residents across Gauteng are advised to monitor the latest forecasts as the cold front approaches.
